How to sew a double-sided baby blanket

My first baby blanket was made in 2015, I believe. Caroline, a friend of mine, was pregnant with her second child. I was inspired to make my first baby-themed sewing project. Caroline, my friend and best friend made this project special. She also inspired me to make double-sided baby blankets for friends who were expecting. You can expect some amazing results with the cs6000i sewing machine.

Since then, I've made 5 blankets for myself and my daughter. I haven't clicked pics of them until the one I made for Erin, a long-time friend. They actually went to kindergarten together. Ramona will be Ramona's cool older friend, who buys her kid beer at 23 when Ramona turns 20.

Back to baby blankets. This is the first baby blanket that I made for Caroline's daughter in 2015. It's simple.

Easy baby blanket tutorial

I'm not a seamstress. I don't claim to be a skilled seamstress. Baby blankets are easy enough for me to make. Although I am able to use a sewing machine for simple projects, I don't know how to navigate it. This is one such project. This double-sided baby blanket can be sewn if you are able to sew straight lines.

How much fabric do I require for a baby blanket?

All of my baby blankets are roughly the same size, 30 by 40 inches. You can make them smaller. I did it with the last one I photographed for this tutorial. It is probably closer to 28 by 35 inches. Babies are very small!

What is the ideal material to make a baby blanket out of?

It is worth stopping by your local Jo-Ann fabric store (or similar, depending on where you are) to check out the nursery flannels. Although some of the stretchy fleeces and super-soft fabrics are tempting, I wouldn't recommend them if you're a beginner.

Stretchy knits can be difficult to sew. If you don't have the right needle and foot, they can get stuck in your machine. The thin nursery flannels are a great choice. They are easy to sew and don't have a lot of stretches.

So here's what I used.

  • Soft flannel nursery fabric. I bought 1 yard of a decorative and 1 yard for the back.

  • 1 yard of % cotton batting; this is exactly what I used

  • Sewing machine

  • Measurement tape, markers, and sewing pins

And here's my easy yet awesome double-sided baby blanket tutorial!

Step 1: Cut the pieces

Three pieces of fabric should be cut at the desired size. A baby blanket is 30 by 40 inches, as we've discussed. This is the size that most of my blankets have been. However, my latest one was just a few inches smaller. Your decorative/main fabric (the fabric with the animal print) is the first. The back piece (my grey piece) is the second. The interior batting is the last.

It can be difficult to cut straight lines, so I recommend that you use a yardstick or a long straightedge to draw your line. A rotary cutter is also an option, making things easier. You may need to lay the patterned fabric side-by-side if you have a pattern.

Once you have cut all your pieces, place them on top of each other like this. Although it may seem strange, I promise you that it is possible! Remember that the interior batting layer does not have a right or wrong side, so don't worry too much. Depending on the item you select, the back piece might not have a right or wrong side.

Step 2: Pin fabric in the area and sew

Pin the fabric in place by aligning the corners carefully. An anchor pin should be inserted through the middle of each piece. Then, I attach pins to the ends.

You should sew a straight seam around your fabric. Leave about 6 inches of seam open. This is the easiest area to sew. Here you will flip the blanket right-side up.

After you have finished sewing the seam, trim the corners. This will make your corners sharper. Ensure not to clip the seam you have sewn. I've done it when I made pillow covers...more times than one. You can also trim excess fabric around the blanket's perimeter.

Step 3: Turn right-side out as well as pin the minute opening shut

Flip the blanket over by pulling the 5-inch opening. If the fabric isn't giving, don't get discouraged. You can slowly work the fabric through. When it is right-side-up, gently push the corners out until they look clean.

Fold the blanket in half to conceal the ragged cut. To get a neat fold, you might have to trim the batting. You can iron the folded seam to get it neat. But be careful not to get the iron on the pins. They'll get very hot.

Step 4: Ensure to sew the opening shut and sew a seam around the blanket's entire perimeter

Use a straight stitch to close the seam. This seam will be visible from clothing's outside, so I prefer to sew a French seam around the blanket's perimeter. This will ensure that the opening is closed securely and adds a decorative trim. For this method, I prefer singer simple buttonhole feature if I wanna create some clothes as well.

What's a French seam?

Although it sounds extravagant, it is actually quite simple. The blanket's raw edges are visible on the inside if you turn it right-side up. The edge isn't very polished. To enclose the edge of the fabric, sew a straight seam around the blanket's perimeter to create a French seam.

This gives the blanket's exterior a polished, flat look. You can see the difference. This is a blanket that has been flipped upside down. The French seam is sewn around the edges of the double-sided baby blanket in the second photo.

The regular seam can be seen on the first baby blanket that I made. This blanket did not have the "French" stitch added around its perimeter.
